The Art of Public Speaking- Group 1
Foundations of Public Speaking and Building Confidence To Be Great
My experience with Group 1 and learning about the fundamentals in creating a good public speaker was eye-opening. My group as well as all of the other groups highlighted the importance of Confidence. I learned that public speaking is a skill that can be acquired with practice and not something people are just born with. It not only takes practice, but preparation, knowledge, and reliability as well.
Although there are many other Principles to the art, The base of it all is definitely what you know and how you present it.
Effective communication can make or break a Speech. A speaker must always be aware of their credibility and their audience. I discovered that for in order for a speaker to become reliable, they must build their credibility through the audience using credible sources and effectively communicating their message to whoever is listening. Although public speaking is about conveying a message, I learned it goes far beyond just presenting and speaking. Public speakers must also be good listeners. Obtaining feedback from audiences, mentors, or anyone really; is a big part of engaging effectively with your current and even future audiences.
I also learned the different types of communication and styles of speaking. The speaker must cater to the audience and understand the atmosphere before presenting any type of speech. Each speech carries a different message and that effects the tone, the language, and even the attitude used to express that message. Emphasizing emotion is also important by setting the tone for how your audience views you. Setting a good first impression, keeps the listeners hooked on what comes next.
Of course, all of these fundamentals lead back to having confidence and authenticity. Being a good speaker means effectively communicating by reading the room, but remaining your true authentic self in the midst of it all.
Overall, each group's presentation successfully shined a light on the key foundations of the art. These presentations not only educated me, but encouraged my classmates and I to be confident in ourselves and what we have to share with the world. Each one of us stepped out of our comfort zones to speak to a class of peers we hardly know. I believe that is thanks to the preparation and the information provided to us in each chapter, showing us how to be effective and great.
