I Think We Did Good! (group 1)

To be honest, when this group project was first assigned, I have to say I was a bit stressed out about it. The thought of coming up with an entire speech within a week or two’s time frame was a bit overwhelming, especially since we were assigned to go first out of the four groups. Going first also meant that we didn’t have anything to look at or any guidelines on just how detailed our speeches were expected to be, which also contributed to my stress levels. All I could think about at this point was just making sure I had enough time, that I stayed organized, and that everyone within my group stayed on the same page.

However, as I started getting into this project, I knew that organization was key so that things didn’t completely get out of hand. I made sure that each and every member within my group had a topic and a role within the presentation, which I think really helped a lot since it ensured that no one within the group became confused about what they were doing and what they were expected to do.

As I and my group were dividing up each chapter and what each member within my group would be talking about, a few changes occurred unexpectedly. We were told that new members were joining the class, which meant a new member within my group, while another member within my group ended up dropping the class altogether, which meant we had to readjust and bring this new member up to speed on what we were doing so far. Although this was a bit frustrating, it also showed me just how important it is to adapt and become flexible, especially when things don’t exactly go according to plan.

For my part of the presentation, I was assigned to work on Chapter 5, which dealt with different kinds of audiences and the importance of understanding your audience and the situation before giving your speech. I chose this chapter for my part of the presentation because I think it is one of the most important parts of public speaking. Although you may have an excellent speech, it will not be effective if it does not reach your audience. Working on this chapter helped me realize the amount of consideration that goes into determining the way you will be able to communicate your ideas to your audience.

While working on Chapter 5, I learned that an audience can be quite different, considering factors such as their age, background, ideas, expectations, and knowledge, among others. Therefore, it is clear that it is up to the speaker to adjust their tone, language, and even style while giving the speech. A speech may be formal, for instance, in a classroom, while it may be casual in another event. I learned that the situation is equally important, just like the audience.

One of the biggest challenges I faced when preparing was how to manage my time. The ideas I wanted to present took much longer than I anticipated. Although I was comfortable with the ideas and concepts, I realized that I had underestimated how much time it would take to explain them to others. During the presentation, I was advised by my professor that I had spent a lot of time on some parts of the presentation. It was a little embarrassing at first, but I realized it was also a good thing because it meant I had a weakness to work on.

I have learned that it is not enough to be familiar with the material one is presenting. One also needs to be good at time management and at keeping the audience engaged without giving them too much information. I have also learned that one needs to practice one's timing as much as one practices the content.

In spite of that, the presentation went quite well, I think. I felt comfortable with the information I was presenting, and I tried my best to use my own words when explaining the information, rather than just reading from the book. This made me feel more relaxed and helped the presentation sound more natural. Using my own words also helped me connect better with the audience and explain my ideas in a better way.

I enjoyed listening to the presentations by the other groups as well. Group 2 presented on brainstorming ideas and the purpose of a speaker. They emphasized the importance of knowing the main idea behind the speech before presenting. They also presented on the delivery of a speech, including confidence and body language. This again emphasized the importance of a speaker’s presence. Group 3 presented on the use of words in a speech. They explained that words have a great influence on the audience. Group 4 presented on the different kinds of speeches, including informative and persuasive speeches. They explained that a speech can be used in different ways depending on the situation.

In retrospect, I found that the project was much less stressful than I thought it was going to be. Although we had our challenges, including time management and changes in the group, we were able to work through them and produce a good outcome. I think everyone contributed well and did their part. The experience was good, and I learned a lot. I learned that I am capable of doing a good job, and I am more confident in class.
